As England’s largest county, Yorkshire has everything to offer the walker, from soaring sea cliffs to rolling Moors and Wolds, pastoral lowlands and of course the Yorkshire Dales.

This area was introduced to many people by the TV series All Creatures Great and Small, based on the books of James Herriot about a country Vet.

The Yorkshire Dales are typified by steep sided valleys with fast flowing rivers and their waterfalls. Stone walls mark the field boundaries and climb perilously up the hillsides with small stone barns dotting the fields to give the area it’s unique character.

The Dales were once a hive of industrial activity, and the remains of old lead mines are found throughout the area. Many of today’s footpaths were trod by miners walking to or from work. This book gives a flavour of the varying character of the Dales from the majestic Strid gorge to the splendour of Aysgarth Falls, the historic town of Grassington to Cam and Barden Fells.
