Ridges, rivers, gentle rounded hills, rolling countryside, pretty villages with stone cottages, ruined castles and abbeys and the magnificent architecture of Castle Howard sum up the Howardian Hills. Well signed footpaths and bridleways add to the pleasure of walking this area of great natural beauty and history.
None of the walks are difficult and vary in length from a leisurely three mile hunt for the Gilbertine monks to a nine mile search for early man. A favourite of mine is the short walk of four and a half miles along the ridge of Caukley’s Bank with fantastic views across Ryedale to the North York Moors before descending to the banks of the River Rye to walk along to Nunnington. You could visit the magnificent old manor house there are continue a little further into the village to the Royal Oak Inn for a real treat of good ale and fine food. ‘Bootless’ walkers are welcome!
You will be impressed by your first sight of Castle Howard situated on a ridge of the Howardian Hills. This grand architectural gem must be visited not only for the house but to walk its grounds and see the monuments, mausoleum and temples. There is a seven and a half mile walk in the book which guides you through part of the grounds on rights of way, but take care not to be tempted to stray off the path.
