Harvey BMC British Mountain Map Lake District
This latest 1:40,000 scale map (about 1.5 inches to the mile in old money) is printed directly onto plastic, which makes it hard-wearing, tear-resistant, 100% waterproof and lightweight into the bargain. Usefully it covers the majority of the main Lake District's fells on a single sheet at a superb scale for walking, and apparently it weighs less than half the weight of a traditional laminated map - time perhaps to shelve the four OS sheets that cover the same area. The map is produced by Harveys with their well known colour layer shading system, helping to portray the lie of the land clearly. One of the things I liked most was that on the reverse side of the map there is a 1:20,000 enlargement of the most popular summits, from Scafell, northwards to Great Gable and east as far as the Langdale Pikes. The great detail available here will be a real help in navigating this complex and confusing area.
