2017 Petzl Head Torch Review

Head torches are a basic item in most outdoor enthusiasts kit bag with Petzl being the brand to buy.

In recent years we think that Petzl have fallen behind some other brands in terms of their power and the range has got very confusing with an increasing number of torches with the name 'Tikka' in it somewhere.

That all changes in 2017 with a complete range refresh. I imagine someone sat down one day and looked at the mess they had created, at that point a big axe fell and all current models were scrapped. The design team brief probably went something like this; your only allowed 1 Tikka model; power must be increase; all models must use the same rechargeable battery; the range must make sense to our customers.

The good news is they managed all of the above, its a shocker really, common sense rarely rules supreme.

The new Petzl head torch range now has Tikkina, Tikka, Zipka (Tikka with the clever retractable strap system) Actik and Actik Core.

The good news is prices have been held so Tikkina is still only £20 but now has 150 lumens, whilst the top of the shop Actik Core is £50 with 350 lumens and includes the new Core Li-pol battery worth £20.

The new Core battery fits in all the above head torches which makes the Actik basic model a poor buy because for an extra £10 you get the Core battery and an extra 50 lumens in the Actik Core head torch. The Core charges on micro USB, more sense, and better yet if it runs out you can fit 3 x AAA batteries to your head torch without the need for silly battery holders, simple and sensible.

The Petzl Tikka, Zipka and Actik also have a luminous LED housing so you can find the torch in  the dark.

So which one is for you?

The Tikkina is a great back up torch or camping torch with enough power to get to the loo on the camp site or to read a book, it will also be great around the home.

The Tikka is better for walkers at night or wilderness camping thanks to its extra power.

The Zipka is great for travel thanks to its clever retract system, you can wear it on your head, or a wrist or wrap it around handle bars or a post, the possibilities are endless.

The Actik or Actik core will be great for faster movers, runners will love it, or for Mountain Rescue and other professional applications, or those who use a head torch regularly as the Core battery will save you a fortune in batteries.

You say that "The new Core battery fits in all the above head torches which makes the Actik basic model a poor buy because for an extra £10 you get the Core battery and an extra 50 lumens in the Actik Core head torch. " I think it depends on what you are looking for in terms of battery life because the basic model is claimed to have a 60h burn time on high mode whereas the Core seems to have only a 2h burn time on high mode.
