A great idea, giving stability on snow and ice on a variety of footwear which otherwise would not be suitable for a proper crampon. They are of course not a crampon replacement and should not be used on technical ground, (and if you need to ask what that means, then you probably should not be going into the mountains in winter anyway without suitable training).
These can be used on moorland environments and well defined paths where there are no big drops to slip off, but the paths have compacted snow and ice, in these circumstances walking boot rubber soles offer little grip.
The Grivel Ran is an anti slip device to be used in case of need on snow-covered terrain. Excellent solution for the trekker and the trail runner on snow, icy trails, wet grass or simply hiking on steep, muddy terrain. It can be helpful for wildlife watchers and mountain photographers, and also for all those professionals who operate on snow covered or icy terrain: e.g. park rangers, woodsmen operators at ski resorts. Mountain Rescue Teams will appreciate its adaptability to shoes and boots without tools. Their strong points are: Its ability to adapt itself to different types of shoes, from those for trail running to those for trekking, thanks to the silicone band that requires no adjustment with screws, screwdrivers, or other tools; steel spikes with anti-corrosion treatment; a Velcro band to ensure stability on the foot once fitted. Comes with a bag.
Please note: The Ran is an anti slip device and is NOT a crampon for alpinism. It is not a PPE. The size chart below is designed as a very rough guide, if you're planning to use these on mountain boots or similar please get the next size up.
